If water is dripping near a light or outlet, switch off that circuit at the breaker. Then call a roofer. The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes, and local prices vary.
What a repair costs
Getting the roof looked at
An inspection tells you what's wrong before anyone prices a fix.
| Inspection | Published range |
|---|---|
| On the roof | $100 to $400; the guides' averages run about $250 to $2805-7 |
| By drone | $100 to $4505-6 |
We don't list a range for infrared inspections or for a roof certification letter. Ask for a written price if you need one.
Deciding between a repair and a new roof
Ask the roofer who looks at it:
- What they found, where, and whether they can show you photos.
- Whether the damage is in one place or spread across the roof.
- How old they think the roof is, and what they're going on.
- What a repair would cost, and what a new roof would cost, both in writing.
- What warranty comes with the repair, and with a new roof.
A second opinion helps when one roofer recommends a new roof and you expected a repair. The new roof cost guide has published ranges for a re-roof by material, and the roofing and gutter cost estimator shows the range for the job you pick.
If the damage came from a storm, the insurance claims guide covers what some state laws say about contractors and your claim. The verify guide shows where to check a roofer's license or registration.
When you're ready, you can ask for quotes from roofers near you.
Ranges compiled from HomeGuide, This Old House, Forbes Home, Fixr and Angi, checked September 2026.
